Fencing Service Tips on How to Clean Wrought Iron
Remove any Vegetation and Debris
Over time the likes of weeds, grass, and leaves can grow around your fencing. This does contain moisture, which in turn result in rust and corrosion. Before you or your fencing service starts any restoration, make sure to clean up the area around your fence by removing any loose debris, leaves, grass, and vegetation.
Removing Surface Degradation
Once you have done the above, you will see what you will need to deal with. You could notice rust, corrosion, and even peeling paint. Use a stiff wire brush to remove this, and pay close attention to any intricate curves, designs, and hinged areas as sanding these will be quite difficult.
Smoothing out the surface
Use a medium grit sandpaper to smooth the surface area, this will also create a more textured finish that will help the paint adhere better to the fencing.
Check for Stability
You should also check your wrought iron fence for any structural issues. With some cases, welding is needed in order to reattach areas of your fence which have degraded beyond basic repair.

Check any hinges to see if they still work properly, and replace any missing screws or hardware.
Cleaning

Priming
Applying primer before painting will provide more protection for your fence against further rust and corrosion. Use a rust-inhibiting, exterior rated primer what is specifically designed for metal and apply an even coat. Aerosol primers can create a more uniform look than a brush painted primer, in addition to it penetrating more into the nooks and crannies often found with intricately wrought ironwork. Wait until the primer is dry before using enamel paint.
